UK Drivers’ Union Wants a Lifetime Basic Income Before Robotaxis Take Their Jobs
London drivers’ union ADCU wants app and robotaxi companies to pay displaced private hire drivers a lifetime basic income. Here’s what they’re asking for and what it means for your hustle.

Every rideshare driver has thought it at least once: what happens to me when the car doesn’t need a driver? A drivers’ union in the UK just gave its answer, and it’s a big ask.
What the union is asking for
The App Drivers and Couriers Union (ADCU) wants a lifetime basic income for private hire drivers whose work is hit by self-driving cars, paid for by the app companies and the autonomous vehicle operators, TaxiPoint reported on October 16. The union calls it the centerpiece of a “Just Transition.”
Its demands, per TaxiPoint and the Institute of Employment Rights:
- A guarantee for drivers currently working on app platforms
- A Just Transition Fund paid for by companies licensed to run autonomous vehicles in the UK
- An immediate halt to new private hire licences in London
The union says the basic income should be set at full loss of average earnings. “Living wages. Not CV writing classes, funding for night school courses or job counselling,” ADCU General Secretary Cristina Ioanitescu said.
Why now
The call follows a critical report from the London Assembly Transport Committee, and the union plans to protest Uber’s Wayve driverless cars, TaxiPoint reports. The union says autonomous vehicle pilots are already running in London, and self-driving Pony.ai cars operated by Uber are reported to be under consideration for Manchester.
The union’s numbers (their estimates, not official)
The ADCU looked at a worst case where all 113,166 licensed London private hire drivers had to claim Universal Credit, the UK’s main welfare payment. In that scenario it estimates:
- An annual welfare bill approaching £3 billion
- About £3.4 billion in lost earnings
- Around £6.8 million in lost tax revenue
TaxiPoint is clear that these are the union’s own estimates for the scenario it describes. The proposal would still need a funding plan and decisions on who qualifies, how much is paid, and for how long.
Pros and cons
Pros (for drivers): It puts the cost of automation on the companies that profit from it instead of the drivers. It pushes the question of what happens to drivers into the open now, before the robotaxis scale up. The union says most of its drivers are over 40 and many don’t speak English as a first language, so retraining isn’t an easy fix for everyone.
Cons: Nobody has agreed to pay for it, and there’s no funding mechanism yet. A freeze on new London licences would shut the door on new drivers. And it’s a UK fight. There’s nothing like this on the table in the US.
What this means for your hustle
- This is coming here too. Robotaxis are already carrying paid riders in US cities. The driver-replacement question isn’t theory anymore.
- Don’t count on a bailout. A lifetime basic income is a demand, not a law. Plan like no one’s coming to cover lost fares.
- Stack a skill robots can’t do yet. Trades, repair, and hands-on work are a safer backup than one app. More at hustleonhustle.com.
